As a child, I used to visit my aunt's house in the Italian Alps during the Summer. We walked for miles surrounded by the most amazing flora. There were gentians by the roadside and acres of pale mauve species crocus. I think my love of flowers started then, and I began gardening and trying to grow flowers and vegetables.
Later, when I lived in Suffolk, I had half an acre of vegetables which fed my growing family. The little ones could be found foraging on peas and sweet corn and fruit. That is how the eldest found out that eating eleven green apples is not a good idea!
Now, after more than thirty years working in the NHS I am retired and can concentrate on the garden once again. I have adapted to grow mainly flowers for cutting, most of which I start from seed every Spring. I have learnt so much from other female flower farmers who are generous with their knowledge. Each year brings a new excitement as I try growing new varieties.
